Mesothelioma Physical Support Therapies

A physical support therapy is an alternative approach to multimodal therapy that focuses on providing support for the body while it fights cancer.  There are several types of physical support therapies available:

    • Detoxification.  The term “detoxification” refers to a process in which toxins, chemicals, and foreign substances are purged from the body with the intention of creating an environment in which treatments will be most effective.  Dietary changes, nutritional supplements, and colonic cleansing may be recommended in the detoxification process.
    • Water therapy.  This form of physical support is commonly referred to as hydrotherapy, and involves the use of water treatments in the form of immersion, steam baths, saunas, and compresses.
    • Qigong.  Qigong is the movement therapy in traditional Chinese medicine practice, which also focuses on the balancing of the body’s energies.
    • Heat therapy.  Heat therapy operates under the same principle as do fevers, in which the body heats itself to destroy threatening agents and sweat out toxins.  Heat is especially recommended in tumor treatment due to the tumors’ poor relative blood flow.
    • Massage and exercise.  Alternative medicine frequently suggests the incorporation of therapeutic massage for cancer patients.  Additionally, exercise is believed to have anticancer benefits by increasing oxygenation and stimulating the removal of toxins from the body.
